Lead Agencies

Through the lead agency instrument, ARIS enables simpler international collaboration between researchers from Slovenia and researchers from other European countries. The scheme simplifies the application and evaluation of joint research projects and reduces administrative burdens.

Of (co-)funding as a partner agency (2021–2025)

Researchers from two or three countries submit a joint project application. The co-applicants agree which agency will act as lead agency.

The lead agency carries out the entire evaluation process. Partner agencies will normally accept the results of the evaluation without further assessment. Each agency then (co-)funds its national part of the research project.

A research project is (co-)funded only if the decision to (co-)fund is agreed by all participating agencies.

ARIS can act as lead or partner agency.

When ARIS acts as a partner agency, the evaluation process is carried out by the foreign lead agency. ARIS usually recognises the results of the evaluation and (co-)funds the Slovenian part of the research project.

The joint application is submitted to the foreign lead agency. The Slovenian partner submits an administrative application to ARIS.

(Co-)financing is based on a direct contract.

Weave scheme

Weave is a multilateral lead agency scheme, building on existing national funding programmes. The agencies cooperate on the basis of mutual recognition of assessments.

ARIS collaborates with several European agencies under the Weave scheme and (co-)funds the Slovenian part of the research projects.

Direct cooperation is established with:

  • FWF (Austria),
  • FWO (Belgium/Flanders),
  • GA ČR (Czech Republic),
  • HRZZ (Croatia),
  • FNR (Luxembourg),
  • NCN (Poland),
  • SNSF (Switzerland)
  • DFG (Germany).

Bilateral agreement with Hungary

ARIS cooperates with the Hungarian National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH). The evaluation process is carried out by the lead agency, with each country (co-)funding its part of the research project.

When ARIS acts as lead agency, it conducts the entire evaluation process and notifies the foreign partner agencies of the results. If the project reaches the agreed funding threshold, ARIS recommends that partner agencies (co-)fund their portion of the project. Partner agencies generally recognise the results without further evaluation.

The joint project is submitted under the regular ARIS national call for the (co-)funding of research projects.

Direct cooperation is established with:

  • FWF (Austria),
  • FWO (Belgium/Flanders),
  • GA ČR (Czech Republic),
  • HRZZ (Croatia),
  • FNR (Luxembourg),
  • NCN (Poland),
  • SNSF (Switzerland)
  • NKFIH (Hungary),
  • DFG (Germany).
