International partnerships allow researchers in Slovenia to join international consortia and collaborate on joint research projects. Calls are usually carried out by ministries and national and regional agencies in cooperation with other partner countries.

Each country funds its part of the project according to its national rules, the rules of the European Union Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation and the rules of the consortium of participating organisations, and the selection of projects is based on an international evaluation process.

ARIS is currently involved in the following partnerships:

  • DUT,
  • PRIMA,
  • LEAP-SE,
  • CHANSE.

The DUT Partnership (Driving Urban Transitions towards a Sustainable Future) is a European partnership of the Horizon Europe programme that funds research and innovation for sustainable urban development. The partnership brings together research funders, policy makers and urban development agencies from several EU Member States and other countries.

The partnership focuses on three key areas:

  • the circular economy in urban environments,
  • energy-positive districts and neighbourhoods,
  • the 15-minute cities concept and sustainable mobility.

The aim is to support systemic transitions towards climate-neutral, inclusive and resilient urban environments.

Calls and cooperation

The calls are organised as joint international calls with a single evaluation procedure. Slovenian research groups can be involved as partners in international consortia.

Applications must comply with the international conditions of the call and the national conditions set by ARIS.

ARIS participates in the preparation and implementation of calls and (co-)finances the Slovenian part of successfully evaluated projects in accordance with national rules.

PRIMA is a partnership for research and innovation in the Mediterranean. It provides joint scientific, financial and administrative management through a single secretariat.

The programme runs from 7 August 2017 to 31 December 2028.

PRIMA focuses on three key areas in the Mediterranean region:

  • water management,
  • agricultural systems,
  • agri-food supply chains.

The programme aims to contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources and to the long-term stability and development of the region.

Funding

Funding for the programme comes from European Union framework programmes and the countries involved in the partnership.

ARIS (co-)funds the Slovenian part of PRIMA collaborative research projects that are positively evaluated in the international review process and proposed for funding.

Slovenia's activities in the PRIMA programme are coordinated by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.

LEAP-SE (Long-Term Joint EU-AU Research and Innovation Partnership on Sustainable Energy) is a long-standing EU-Africa partnership on research and innovation in sustainable energy. The programme promotes research and innovation cooperation between Europe and Africa.

The activities are carried out in the framework of the Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Partnership (CCSE) as part of the AU-EU Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation.

The partnership focuses on:

  • renewable energy sources and their integration into energy systems,
  • smart energy systems and networks,
  • energy solutions for agriculture, mobility and industry,
  • innovative solutions for home use and green hydrogen.
